COMPOSITION
OF THE TOP 25
The list this year is dominated
by Multi National Companies and companies from
the IT industry. Even though we had cross
industry participation, companies from the IT
industry continued to impress with their effectiveness
and innovativeness. 16 companies from
the IT industry featured on the list.
Similarly, over 15 MNCs are on the list this
year. Their presence indicates that these
companies had understood the essence of these
workplace relationships that employees have
with management, one’s job and other employees.
Indian companies now seem to following suit
to the rest of the world. In the land
which takes pride in its spiritual heritage
and where people were genuinely valued, it is
only recently that businesses have begun to
discover the essence of building great workplaces.
Thirteen companies from the
2003 list have featured on the GPTW list once
again this year. The twelve new entrants
mostly in the top half of the list are companies
that impressed us greatly this year. Together,
these companies forming the list of Top 25 Great
Places to Work for 2004 raised the bar for India
Top 25 in terms of the overall scores on various
parameters. The scores on each of the
statements in the employee survey administered
increased by an average of 9 percentage points
in all except five statements.
Comparing India to other countries
this year in all dimensions revealed that the
overall gap that existed between us and leading
countries till last year has narrowed many a
fold. This once again can be attributed
to the larger participation and selection of
very high quality of companies that have been
short-listed this year. The score for
the final question of the survey “Taking
everything into account, I would say this is
a Great Place to Work” between last year
and this year increased by 8 percentage points.
An increase to 86% makes India’s score
comparable to that of the US (87%) and EU (89%).

Ultimately it is all about corporations
creating environments in which people discover
who they are and what they are truly capable
of becoming. In times when we spend majority
of our waking hours working or thinking about
work, workplaces have replaced friend circles
and neighborhoods and have become the biggest
forces for shaping communities. It is no wonder,
therefore, to see that those who work with the
winners are admired for what they bring to their
families and the country at large. If by working
with FedEx, Texas Instruments and so on, people
refuse to engage in corruption in their personal
lives, the message would be clear: Great Places
to Work create great human beings and build
inspired communities!!
